Cross-play has become an increasingly standard feature across major multiplayer titles, and with GTA 6 launching simultaneously on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, fans are naturally wondering whether Rockstar will let players on different platforms team up in GTA Online’s next chapter.

Rockstar’s track record on this front has been mixed. GTA Online never implemented full cross-play between PlayStation and Xbox during its lengthy run, despite the feature becoming common across the industry over the past several years. That absence has been a frequent point of frustration among fans, especially as friend groups splintered across different console ecosystems.

Technical barriers aren’t really the issue at this point, since plenty of other major multiplayer games have successfully implemented cross-play across competing platforms. The more likely explanation involves business considerations between platform holders and publishers, along with the added complexity of balancing online economies across ecosystems with different player bases.

Given how central GTA Online’s economy became to the franchise’s long-term success, there’s reasonable pressure on Rockstar to reconsider this stance for GTA 6. A larger, unified player base could mean faster matchmaking, more active public sessions, and reduced fragmentation, all of which benefit the health of a live-service game over time.

As of now, Rockstar hasn’t confirmed cross-play plans for GTA 6 one way or another. Whether the studio decides to break from its previous approach will likely become one of the more closely watched details as more information rolls out ahead of launch.
