Speedrunning has become a significant part of GTA’s legacy, with dedicated communities forming around categories for GTA 5, San Andreas, and Vice City that are still actively run years after each game’s release. As GTA 6 approaches, that community is already discussing what a game of this scale might mean for the sport.

One challenge speedrunners anticipate is simply the size of the new map. Larger worlds can cut both ways: more room for creative sequence breaks and glitches, but also longer travel times that could work against fast completion times unless clever routing options exist. Past GTA games have had beloved glitches, like unexpected vehicle launches or mission skips, that speedrunners rely on heavily, and the community is eager to see what GTA 6’s engine allows.

Story structure also plays a role. With two protagonists and a narrative built around their partnership, speedrunners will need to figure out how mission order and character switching affect optimal routes, similar to how GTA 5’s three-protagonist structure created unique routing puzzles for runners.

Early access streamers and dataminers are expected to move quickly after launch, mapping out skips and exploits within days if not hours. Given how quickly the community adapted to GTA 5 back in 2013, there’s little doubt GTA 6 will have an active, competitive speedrunning scene almost immediately.
