One of the most common questions circulating ahead of GTA 6’s release is simple: how long will the main story actually take? Rockstar hasn’t published an official number, but comparisons to the studio’s past releases give a reasonable idea of what to expect from a game built on this scale.
GTA 5’s story took most players somewhere between 30 and 35 hours to complete, while Red Dead Redemption 2 stretched well past 50 hours for players who engaged with its slower pacing. Given that GTA 6 features two playable protagonists in Jason and Lucia, along with a map reportedly larger than GTA 5 and Red Dead 2 combined, expectations have naturally shifted toward a longer campaign.
Dual protagonists add another layer of complexity to estimating length. Some missions may require switching perspectives or completing objectives from both characters’ viewpoints, which could extend playtime without necessarily padding the experience artificially. Rockstar has historically been careful about pacing, favoring meaningful mission variety over repetitive filler.
Completionist playtime is likely to dwarf the main story regardless of its exact length. Between side activities, collectibles, random encounters, and the sheer size of Leonida, players aiming to see everything the game offers could easily be looking at well over 100 hours, similar to how GTA 5 and Red Dead 2 completion times ballooned once side content was factored in.
Until Rockstar releases more concrete details, estimates remain speculative. Still, given the ambition on display so far, GTA 6 seems unlikely to be a game most players finish in a single weekend.
