Weather has always played a small role in GTA games, but early footage of GTA 6 suggests Rockstar is treating it as a core gameplay system rather than a background detail. Hurricanes, thunderstorms, and shifting light throughout the day all appear far more integrated into Leonida than anything seen in GTA 5.

Florida’s real climate seems to be the inspiration. Sudden afternoon downpours, humidity haze over the swamps, and dramatic cloud formations rolling in off the ocean have all shown up in trailers. There’s speculation that hurricanes could even become a recurring in-world event, temporarily altering traffic patterns, flooding streets, or forcing NPCs to board up windows and evacuate certain areas.

Day-night transitions also look more detailed than before. Vice City’s skyline glowing under a sunset, streetlights flickering on as dusk settles, and the way neon reflects off wet pavement after rain all point to a lighting engine built specifically to showcase changing conditions. These transitions aren’t just cosmetic; player visibility, NPC behavior, and even certain missions could shift depending on the time of day or current weather.

For online play, dynamic weather raises interesting questions too. If storms roll through shared sessions in real time, players could find themselves reacting to the same hurricane simultaneously, adding an unpredictable layer to heists or races that wouldn’t exist in calmer conditions.

Weather systems are easy to overlook when discussing a game this size, but if Rockstar pulls this off, it could end up being one of the more memorable ways GTA 6 sets itself apart from its predecessor.
