Every major GTA release has left a mark on how open-world games are designed, and expectations are unusually high that GTA 6 will do the same. Developers across the industry have spent years building on ideas the franchise popularized, from mission structure to how a living city should feel to move through.

One area where GTA 6 seems poised to push boundaries is NPC behavior. Trailer footage and reported leaks suggest a world where pedestrians react more dynamically to player actions, follow more complex daily routines, and behave in ways that feel less scripted than in previous entries. If Rockstar delivers on this, it could raise the bar for what players expect from simulated city life in any open-world title.

Environmental interactivity is another area of interest. Reports point toward more destructible environments, deeper water simulation, and weather systems that meaningfully affect gameplay rather than serving as pure visual flair. Competing studios have experimented with similar ideas, but rarely at the scale Rockstar is rumored to be attempting.

There’s also the question of narrative structure. A dual-protagonist story with a criminal couple at its center offers a different rhythm than GTA 5’s three-way perspective switching, and could influence how future open-world games balance multiple playable characters.

If even a portion of what’s been teased makes it into the final game, GTA 6 has the potential to become the reference point the rest of the industry measures itself against for the next several years.
