Heists have defined some of the most memorable moments across the Grand Theft Auto franchise, from GTA 5’s elaborate multi-stage setpieces to GTA Online’s ever-expanding roster of cooperative missions. With GTA 6, expectations for how Rockstar approaches crime and heist gameplay have never been higher.
GTA 5 raised the bar significantly with heists that involved planning stages, crew selection, and multiple approach options, a structure that felt genuinely innovative at the time. Given the decade of refinement Rockstar has had since, both through GTA Online’s continued heist expansions and lessons learned from Red Dead Redemption 2’s mission design, GTA 6’s approach to crime is expected to feel considerably more sophisticated.
Jason and Lucia’s dual-protagonist structure opens up interesting possibilities for how heists and crimes unfold narratively. Rather than assembling a rotating crew of side characters as GTA 5 often did, GTA 6’s story-driven robberies could lean more heavily on the specific dynamic between its two leads, closer to a crime-drama partnership than a traditional heist-team setup.
Leonida’s varied environment also suggests more diverse crime scenarios than Los Santos offered. Swamp-based operations, waterfront smuggling, and Vice City’s nightlife-adjacent crime scenes could all provide distinct settings for different types of missions, giving Rockstar room to avoid the repetitive mission structures that sometimes affected GTA 5’s open world.
Trailer footage has already hinted at bank robberies, shootouts, and high-speed chases, core GTA staples that remain central to the experience regardless of how much the surrounding systems evolve. What’s less clear is how much player choice will factor into approach and outcome, an area GTA 5 experimented with but didn’t fully commit to across every mission.
As more gameplay details emerge closer to the November 19 launch, expect crime and heist mechanics to remain one of the most closely analyzed aspects of GTA 6, given how central they’ve always been to the franchise’s identity.
