One of the more anticipated changes in GTA 6 is how Rockstar plans to overhaul the wanted system that has defined police encounters since the earliest games in the series. Trailer footage has already hinted at a more grounded, believable response from law enforcement, moving away from the arcade-style star system many fans have grown used to.

Rather than police cars magically appearing the moment a star rating increases, early gameplay glimpses suggest officers will respond based on visibility and evidence, similar to how detection worked in Red Dead Redemption 2. Witnesses calling in crimes, security cameras catching a player’s face, or a getaway vehicle being identified could all realistically influence how quickly and how heavily police respond.

This shift also opens the door to smarter escape mechanics. Changing clothes, swapping vehicles, or simply staying out of sight for a period of time may matter more than outrunning a chase at high speed. Some leaked details suggest officers could even remember a player’s description temporarily, making it harder to just disappear around a corner and reappear seconds later unnoticed.

For players who enjoy chaos, this doesn’t necessarily mean police encounters become less exciting. If anything, a more reactive system could make shootouts and pursuits feel higher stakes, since escalation would depend on player choices rather than an arbitrary meter filling up.

Whether this overhaul fully replaces the classic star system or simply refines it won’t be clear until launch, but it’s shaping up to be one of the more meaningful gameplay changes Rockstar has planned for GTA 6.
