More than a decade separates Grand Theft Auto 5’s 2013 launch from GTA 6’s arrival in November 2026, and that gap shows up in nearly every part of the upcoming game’s design. Comparing the two titles offers a useful lens into just how far Rockstar has pushed things this time around.

The most obvious shift is the setting. GTA 5 placed players in Los Santos, a fictionalized take on Los Angeles. GTA 6 moves the action to Leonida, a Florida-inspired state built around a reimagined Vice City. Where Los Santos leaned into sprawling urban grit, early looks at Leonida suggest a more varied landscape of swamps, coastline, and neon-lit city blocks.

Character structure has changed too. GTA 5 gave players three protagonists whose stories mostly ran on separate tracks, occasionally intersecting for heists. GTA 6 narrows that down to two, Jason and Lucia, whose relationship appears to be central to the plot rather than a structural device for switching perspectives.

Technically, the leap is significant simply because of hardware. GTA 5 launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 before later versions arrived for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. GTA 6 skips older hardware entirely, launching only on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, allowing Rockstar to build around modern processing power and storage speeds from the ground up.

Budget and scale tell their own story. GTA 5’s development cost was estimated at around $265 million at the time, a staggering figure for 2013. GTA 6 is widely reported to be the most expensive video game ever made, with Take-Two betting on it to help drive $8 billion or more in company revenue during its first fiscal year on shelves.

If GTA 5 redefined what an open-world game could be, GTA 6 is shaping up to test just how far that formula can be pushed with a decade’s worth of technological progress behind it.
