Character customization has become a bigger part of open-world games over the past decade, and GTA Online expanded significantly on the relatively basic options GTA 5 launched with back in 2013. With GTA 6, fans are hoping Rockstar builds on those years of lessons rather than starting from a limited baseline once again.
Since GTA 6 follows two fixed protagonists, Jason and Lucia, rather than a fully custom player character, the nature of customization will likely differ from GTA Online’s create-your-own-criminal approach. Instead, expectations center more around wardrobe options, accessories, and cosmetic choices that let players personalize Jason and Lucia’s appearance without changing their core identities within the story.
Outfit variety shown in trailer footage already hints at a strong focus on Leonida’s beach and nightlife culture, sunglasses, casual streetwear, and flashier nightlife-appropriate outfits that fit the Vice City aesthetic. Given Rockstar’s attention to detail in Red Dead Redemption 2’s clothing and equipment systems, similar depth seems likely for how Jason and Lucia can be dressed and equipped throughout the story.
Beyond appearance, some fans are hoping for deeper customization tied to gameplay style, weapon loadouts, vehicle preferences, and safehouse personalization that reflect player choices without requiring a fully open character creator. This middle-ground approach would let Rockstar maintain its scripted narrative while still giving players meaningful ways to make their playthrough feel personal.
GTA Online’s eventual character creator, added after GTA 5’s initial launch, remains the most likely template for whatever multiplayer customization GTA 6 introduces separately from the story mode. Given how much GTA Online evolved that system over the years, expectations for online character options are considerably higher than they were back in 2013.
While Rockstar hasn’t detailed customization systems directly, the visual variety already shown suggests personalization will play a meaningful role in how players experience Jason and Lucia’s story, even within a fixed-protagonist structure.
